Testing the election pulse across the country – BBC News

Testing the election pulse across the country – BBC News

Gavin Esler, Presenter of BBC Town Hall Debates:

"The party leaders will have their say in the televised Thursday TV debates, but most of us will not have the chance to meet a party leader in person or to vote for one directly.

All politics, as the former Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Tip O'Neill, famously observed, is local.

Over the next few weeks, beginning tomorrow, our Town Hall Debates will visit the three constituencies of Bolton West, Stirling, and St Austell and Newquay.

In each place 100 or so local voters – many of them still undecided – will put questions to three or four candidates from the leading parties.

It means we will have a chance to listen to the heartbeat of Britain.

    […]

We do not know what to expect. Nor do the candidates.

That is what makes the debates, and this election, so exciting.

    • Town Hall Debates will be aired on the BBC News Channel and BBC website at 1200BST on Tuesday, 13 April."

Prototype: BBC Archiver – Backstage.bbc.co.uk blog

Prototype: BBC Archiver – Backstage.bbc.co.uk blog

Fantastic web archiving prototype by James Holden. Based on BBC home page and main news page, this proof of concept is simply excellent. In his own words:

"In my head I'd see this as being the ultimate tool for archive.org. If you go "way back" using their tool you can see that resources are missing and indeed as the browser changes rapidly the result you see in newer browsers doesn't represent the look and feel the user got at the time which is an important point if you trying to look back at the way it was. Loading Netscape.com in Mosaic back in the mid 90's would have been an altogether different experience than in today's "Chrome's and Firefox's""

World Have Your Say: Moderating your comments – BBC World Service

World Have Your Say: Moderating your comments – BBC World Service

Ros Atkins explains World Service Have Your Say moderation policy:

"First, the blog's been moderated by the same team as the old one. No change in people or policy.

Second, we ask that all comments are brief (three or four short paragraphs unless there are personal stories to tell), polite, on subject, legally sound and not in capitals. If they're not any of these things, I'm afraid we're not going to publish them.

Third, we don't have facility to explain the precise reasons that each rejected comment has been rejected. If it says 'house rules' it's likely to be one of the above reasons. We will email you when possible, but that's not always going to happen due to time constraints.

Fourth, we do appreciate all of your comments. We have no interest in keeping you out of our discussions. You are after all what makes up WHYS."

#debill v #ge2010 – BBC: dot.Rory

8 April, 2010 by Einar Thorsen Leave a Comment

    #debill v #ge2010 – BBC: dot.Rory

"In 24 hours, the hashtag #debill appeared 14,400 times on Twitter, as compared to 1,470 tweets using the election hashtag #ge2010. So, does that mean the mainstream media, with its concentration on campaign news, is ignoring the really big story? Or is this a particularly well-focussed campaign by a relatively small group of activists?"
