BBC’s volcano coverage generates a record 5.5m users in one day – guardian.co.uk

Jemima Kiss reporting on BBC News Online's stats for reporting of Eyjafjallajökull:

"its biggest ever traffic weekend for the 17 to 18 April with more than five million unique users on Saturday and 5.5 million on Sunday.

The busiest single story was the breaking news about the volcano last Thursday with an astonishing four million views in one day – the busiest story of 2010 so far.

"We've covered all the angles we've been able to get to, putting in extra editorial, production and newsgathering effort to ramp up and sustain the level of coverage on the website and elsewhere," said BBC News website editor Steve Herrmann.

"This is something genuinely unexpected, with far-reaching effects, and still unpredictable, and that's reflected in the audience interest, which has been big from the start, and remains high."

    […]

A live volcano news page recorded more than one million views over the two days and overall, eight of the ten busiest stories were volcano related."

BBC News – ‘If I were Prime Minister…’

Great feature on BBC's Election 2010 site:

"What's the one thing you would do if you were Prime Minister?

We have been asking some of you in the first weeks of the general election campaign.

Check out our video wall below by clicking on the faces to find what people (including some you might recognise!) have said so far…"

Manifestos support the BBC … for now – The Guardian

Manifestos support the BBC … for now – The Guardian

Steve Hewlett on party manifestos promises on the BBC:

"So there you have it. One of the few specific media proposals to be found anywhere in manifestoland (also supported by both Labour and the Lib Dems, although they haven't put it in theirs) and, for all the reassuring pre-election talk of a robust and independent BBC, it is quite likely to result in the opposite. Throw in Labour's known predilection for top-slicing and the categorical commitment (in an interview on last week's The Media Show on Radio 4) by Jeremy Hunt, the shadow culture secretary, that the Conservatives will abolish the BBC Trust as soon as charter renewal allows, and it looks as if the BBC is in for quite a fight whoever wins."

BBC staff slam FM&T revamp – Broadcast

BBC staff slam FM&T revamp – Broadcast

Broadcast reporting on discontent among BBC staff over restructuring:

"However, insiders are angered by the decision to plough ahead with the restructure before the Putting Quality First review has been approved by the BBC Trust, and fear the 25% cuts the review proposes will be almost exclusively focused on online content – which currently sits as part of Vision under Simon Nelson, controller of multiplatform and portfolio.

They are also concerned about the personnel departures. It is understood that Newman, who was an outspoken opponent of the changes, was asked not to apply for the new roles. The BBC declined to comment and Newman could not be contacted."
